If you’re not yet drinking butter in your coffee you are missing out on the latest craze that is shaking up the coffee world! The Bulletproof Coffee concept makes you think differently about fat, weight-loss, skipping breakfast and how you take your coffee.
I was first introduced to Bulletproof coffee last March on a trip out to LA. I was visiting a friend for one night, an hour outside the city. She lived in a beautiful remote house way up in the hills. In the morning she offered to make me this new coffee drink she was in to. I remember that morning sitting on the porch in the cool fresh morning air, a blanket wrapped around me, mountains on the horizon, avocado trees sprawled everywhere with the morning dew glistening on their leaves. I took my first sip not really knowing what to expect, but as I closed my eyes and tasted this warm, rich, creamy drink, allowing it to linger in my mouth for just a moment before swallowing it, I knew a love affair had begun!
I have had somewhat of a love/hate relationship with coffee over the years, I love coffee but my body doesn’t. Something felt different about this coffee though. The way I described it at the time was ‘clean’. It felt like clean fuel going into my body. I felt incredibly energized and alert but without the jitters of regular coffee. And best of all my stomach didn’t get bothered like it does with regular coffee. I felt full for several hours after drinking it and did not experience the traditional caffeine crash later in the day. I was intrigued to learn more and I didn’t have to wait long. Coincidentally or not, Dave Asprey, the creator and founder of the Bullet Proof brand was speaking at the health conference I was attending that weekend. He shared his story, the years of research and experimenting he did, and the science behind this coffee.
SO WHAT IS BULLETPROOF COFFEE? Its upgraded coffee blended with grass-fed butter or ghee and brain octane oil.
WHY DO I WANT TO DRINK COFFEE WITH BUTTER? By drinking this coffee loaded with healthy fats for your breakfast the scientific research Dave Asprey did claims that it will give you boundless amounts of sustained energy, clarity and focus, helps you burn fat and reduces food cravings.
Here’s the lowdown:
UPGRADED COFFEE Bulletproof coffee beans are grown, picked and processed using a special method unique to Bulletproof that minimizes mycotoxin contamination. This mold is very common in many other varieties of coffee. Bulletproof coffee beans are also tested for mold contamination and held to stringent quality standards.
GRASS-FED BUTTER or GHEE (we use ghee) – High in omega 3 fatty acids, CLA, beta-carotene, vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin D, vitamin E, and antioxidants. Also high in butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid. Studies show that butyrate can both prevent and decrease inflammation in humans.
BRAIN OCTANE OIL A purified form of medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil from coconut. MCTs are quickly absorbed by the body and converted to ATP (cellular fuel for both body and brain). In contrast to sugar that takes 25 steps to be converted to ATP, Brain Octane Oil takes 3 steps. MCT’s bypass liver processing making them rapidly available by the body for energy. In doing so they boost metabolism, burn fat, and improve cognition.
HOW DO I MAKE IT?
- Start with 14 oz. (237 ml.) of filtered water, fresh off the boil.
- Add 4 tablespoons (37 ml.) freshly ground Bulletproof® Coffee Beans to your french press with the water and brew for 3 minutes.
- Pour the coffee into your blender and add 1 tablespoon Bulletproof® Brain Octane and 1 tablespoon of ghee or unsalted grass-fed butter. I personally also like to add the Bullet proof Collagen Protein powder for extra creaminess and nutrition.
- Blend for 20–30 seconds until it is frothy. Pour into your favorite mug and savor the taste of this delicious brew! This makes a 12 oz cup of coffee.
